Winterizing your Crawlspace

As a homeowner, each winter it’s important to make sure your house is prepared for the cold weather. This winter, although very mild is much of the same.  We have been blessed with record breaking temperatures, but it’s important to not let your guard down.

Below are some tips to protect your home from issues that can negatively impact your wallet, your health and your home:

  • 4131621 lMake sure that your vents are operating properly.  Rust and debris can hinder your automatic temperature vents from closing, so it is important to have them serviced for the colder months and before the months of higher humidity.  If you have stationary vents, they should be closed as well and during the summer, the screens on the vents should checked for holes to minimize rodent activity.
  • Be sure that your home is insulated properly.  Falling and damp insulation is not enough to keep your home insulated throughout the year.  When insulation holds moisture it loses its ability to keep heat in and the cold out.  Proper insulation can save you 10-15% on your energy costs throughout the year.  When our technicians perform an evaluation we check for any moisture issues as well, to make sure you’re not at risk for any mold or mildew growth.
  • Sealing of Air Leaks and Foundation Cracks.  Air leaks are a very cost effective way to help keep rodents out of your home and heat in during the winter months.  Foundation cracks should also be addressed, as the cracks can become worse and affect the structural integrity of your home.  Foundation cracks are also a source of energy loss and be taken seriously.
  • Have a string reinforced vapor barrier installed.  When installing a vapor barrier by Jersey Shore Crawlspace, you will be sure to enjoy lower humidity in your home.  This allows your heating and air conditioning to work less, saving you hundreds and providing a more comfortable living environment.
