Choose the Right Insulation for your Crawlspace

Is your home damp or musty? Do you have mold or mildew? The problem might be right under your feet. The crawl space beneath your house is most likely bare soil, sand or gravel, and the moisture it naturally contains evaporates into the atmosphere. The rate of evaporation can vary on the amount of moisture in the air, the temperature and other factors. Unfortunately, the vapor can also build up, and when it does, it will condense and increase the risk of mold, fungus and wood rot. Crawl space or foundation vents were designed to improve airflow and reduce moisture, but they are inefficient at best, which is why crawl space encapsulation can be an excellent alternative.

A crawl space encapsulation system protects your crawl space from the outdoor environment and eliminates excess vapor and condensation coming from the ground. It can protect your home from a variety of moisture-related issues, including:

  • Mold and mildew
  • Poor indoor air quality
  • Excess humidity and the accompanying allergy and asthma symptoms
  • Structural damage
  • Dampness and odors
  • Wood rot
  • Excessive energy costs

We begin by closing the existing foundation vents, sealing any air leaks or foundation cracks and installing a string reinforced vapor barrier. We then install a dehumidifier designed specifically for crawl spaces. The fiberglass insulation, which is housed in a vapor retarder, can then be installed in the ceiling of the crawl space and between the floor joists. This prevents any moisture from the crawl space from reaching your home.

Encapsulated insulation is available in a variety of widths to fit any joist configuration and multiple R-values.

Along with encapsulated insulation, we also offer rigid foam board insulation. Rigid foam board, or sidewall, insulation is custom fit to your home and attached to your foundation to insulate your foundation walls and close the building envelope. Just like the encapsulated insulation system, rigid foam board is moisture resistant and is designed to withstand the harshest environmental conditions.

If your home is damp, your insulation is moist or you have a problem with mold or mildew, your crawl space could be part of the problem.
