The Rise of Coastal Flooding at the Jersey Shore

There’s no denying that living along the Jersey Shore has its perks. From the beautiful beaches and boardwalks to the forests and the pine barrens, the shore offers an unique living experience that you just can’t get anywhere else.
While living close to the water has its perks, it also comes with its pitfalls. According to statesatrisk.org, “Today, New Jersey has 352,000 people at risk of coastal flooding. By 2050, an additional 110,000 people are projected to be at risk due to sea level rise.” Knowing that coastal flooding is expected to drastically increase within the next few decades, how can we make sure that homes along the shore are prepared?
First we have to understand the science behind the increase in coastal flooding. According to the Press of Atlantic City, the following are the 5 factors that bring coastal flooding:
- Onshore wind.
- Long “fetch” (distance of wind).
- Strong wind… over 15mph sustained.
- Long duration of on-shore winds.
- New or full moon nearby.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection released a Statewide Climate Change Resilience Strategy through Executive Order No. 89 this past September to help address this ongoing concern. According to NJ.gov, this strategy will “promote the long-term mitigation, adaptation, and resilience of New Jersey’s economy, communities, infrastructure, and natural resources throughout the State.”
