Does My Crawl Space Need a Sump Pump?

As a homeowner, you may have heard of a sump pump or vaguely know what it does but not much else. Typically those that know a lot about sump pumps do for a reason, that reason being that they have one in their home or business. If you’re experiencing issues with excess moisture or standing water in your crawl space, chances are that a sump pump is needed.

What is a crawl space sump pump?

A crawl space sump pump is a device located in the crawl space that helps protect your home from flooding. It has a basin and a pump that sucks the water through a tube and away from the house. Even if you believe that you’re only experiencing minimal moisture issues in the crawl space, a sump pump can save you from costly structural problems and protect the health of your family from mold and mildew growth.

Are there different types?

Of course! There are two different types: pedestal sump pumps & submersible sump pumps. The main difference between these types is that pedestal sump pumps are upright with an impeller at the base of a pedestal. The motor is located above the pump and is not meant to get wet. Submersible type sump pumps are installed in a sump pit and are designed to function underwater. These are installed at the lowest point of your home so that the water can flow to it to be pumped out.

Does my crawl space really need one?

To determine if a home really needs a sump pump, the source of the moisture issue needs to first be addressed. In some cases, moisture issues in the crawl space can be solved without one. An example would be extending gutter downspouts away from the home so that water can escape the gutters without flowing back into the home’s foundation or crawl space.

If there’s no way to prevent excess moisture and water vapor from entering your crawl space, then a sump pump will be needed to protect the health of your family and the value of your home. Water should never be “accepted” in the basement or crawl space environment. Constant exposure to standing water breeds bacteria, increases your relative humidity, and saturates your wood with water over time leading to mold growth. This in turn also weakens your wood structure and attracts termites, pests, and rodents due to the moist environment.
