How to Spot Rodent Entry Points
Now that the weather is cooling down, pests and rodents are looking for where to shelter for the winter. Their ideal shelter is somewhere with adequate food, water, and shelter. Could your home be the perfect spot? When you think of how to prevent pests and rodents from coming into your home, you may think of things like keeping food sealed away and only in the kitchen. The reality is that every nook and corner of your home could provide everything they need without you ever knowing. While it’s important to make sure that there aren’t sources of their attraction like food, it’s equally, if not more important, to make sure that there aren’t any rodent entry points in the home.
Signs of a Pest/Rodent Infestation

There are a few telltale signs that you have rodents or other pests in your home. Brown smudges on walls and other surfaces, which are formed by rat grease left behind as they wipe on such surfaces, are one of the most evident signs. Rat droppings in cupboards, drawers, and other areas of the house are another early clue. There are even occasions when you can hear rodents moving around in the walls or attic. You may also notice a foul odor generated by nesting materials and feces left behind by rodents.
Once you’ve determined that you have a rodent problem, the following step is to pinpoint entrance sites and implement proper rodent proofing measures.
Common Entry Points
- Cracks in walls and the foundation. It’s important to look at the interior and exterior walls of your home and foundation for cracks and holes. Even small cracks can allow enough space for pests and rodents to sneak into your home.
- Holes in the roof. The roof should be the first place to look for entry points if you suspect rodents in the attic. Rodents can enter your home through even the tiniest of openings, so thoroughly inspect your roof. If you find any cracks or holes, use a waterproof sealer to fill them in.
- Vents. Vents are an important feature of your HVAC system, but they may also serve as perfect rodent entry points. Make sure holes and gaps around vents are properly sealed, and double-check that metal screening is firmly covering your vents.
- Chimney. The chimney, like your roof, can be an easy target for rodents in search of food and warmth in your home. Make sure your chimney is cleaned on a regular basis to ensure there are no rodent nests, and that you have a chimney grate or cap in place to protect the opening.
